Brief Introduction to BGCI
Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI),established in 1987,registered as non-profitable Charity organization in UK, is the world’s largest network for the protection of plant diversity,as well as one of the three international environmental protection organizations. It now links over 2500 botanic gardens, institutions and individuals in over 120 countries, all working together to preserve and promote plant diversity for the well being of the people and the planet.
China is the third richest country in terms of plant diversity in the world. However, due to many kinds of reason, the number of endangered plant species has been increased dramatically. To help China halt the loss of plant diveristy, BGCI opened its first ever office in China in 2007. One of key activities of this office is to assist in implementing the ‘China’s Strategy for Plant Conservation’. BGCI also has its regional programme offices in America, Singapore, Kenya, Netherland, Japn, Russia, and Spanish to help halt the loss of global plant diversity.
BGCI is working at the following three major areas:
- Enabling people and botanic gardens;
- Securing plant diversity, and
- Influencing decision-making and policy.
